TSP 101

What are TSP’s?

The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is a retirement savings and investment plan for Federal Employees and uniformed service members. It offers you the same type of tax savings and benefits as private sector 401k plans. The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board acts as the plan administrator

TSP Contribution Limits (2025):

  • $23,500 per year
  • For those age 60-63 a new SUPER Catch-Up allows up to $11,250 in annual catch-up contributions

TSP Contribution Buckets:

  • Funds may be deposited in either the Traditional (Pre-Tax) or Roth (Post-Tax) accounts or a combination of both

TSP Matching:

  • CSRS Employees receive zero matching funds
  • FERS Employees are matched up to 5%
    • Government Automatic Contribution – 1%
    • 100% Matching on first 3% contributed
    • 50% Matching on 4%-5%

TSP Fund Options:

  • Monies may be allocated into any of the 15 fund options:
    • G, F, C, S, and I funds
    • Lifecycle Funds
      • L Income, L2025, L2030, L2035, L2040, L2045, L2050, L2055, L2060, L2065, L2070

TSP Resources:

In our opinion TSP is great for ACCUMULATION. However, it is not so great when it comes to PROTECTION and DISTRIBUTION as you move closer to retirement. As a result, a TSP Transfer may be right for you.
